Overnight across the Baltic Sea

Sleep on board and arrive in Tallinn the following morning

Stockholm to Tallinn is Tallink Silja Line’s overnight passenger route between Sweden and Estonia. The normal crossing takes about 16 hours, departing Stockholm in the afternoon or early evening and arriving in Tallinn the following morning.

Baltic Queen operates the regular route year-round, with departures from Tallinn every other evening and a corresponding alternating pattern from Stockholm. Tallink also adds extra departures with Romantika during peak summer periods, so the live timetable should be checked for the exact sailing pattern.

The cruise ferry carries cars and provides cabins, restaurants, bars, shopping and entertainment. Because the route runs overnight, a cabin is strongly recommended even where alternative accommodation categories are offered.

Arrival at Tallinn places travellers close to the Old Town and the road network through Estonia. For greater departure frequency, it is also possible to travel between Stockholm and Helsinki and connect with the two-hour Helsinki–Tallinn Shuttle, though this requires a terminal change in Helsinki.

If you are connecting to accommodation, another ferry or ground transport, leave a sensible margin after the scheduled arrival. Weather, port traffic and boarding operations can occasionally affect the final timing.

Including this crossing in a trip from the UK

Allow for the overland journey to Stockholm before choosing the ferry. A separately booked flight, train or earlier crossing may not protect you if you miss check-in. Use local times on both sides and check entry rules for each country on your full itinerary. Travel within Europe is not automatically free of document checks.

Planning the wider journey in Estonia

Tallinn ferries form part of a wider Baltic itinerary. Check which Helsinki or Stockholm terminal the operator uses and leave a realistic transfer margin when combining separate sea legs.

Planning advice for the journey from Britain

Passengers, vehicles and the fare

Select the correct passenger category before comparing Stockholm to Tallinn fares. A passenger-only boat cannot take a car, and a vehicle ferry may still have limited bicycle or foot-passenger availability. The travel modes shown in the facts panel should be checked against the specific sailing.

For a vehicle booking, give the full height and length including a roof box, rear rack or trailer. Where accommodation is offered, check whether a cabin or seat is required and whether meals are included. Request mobility assistance and any pet space before completing the booking, because these can have separate capacity limits.

Prices depend on the date, passenger mix, vehicle and ticket conditions. Compare the complete return cost and the amendment or cancellation terms. No fixed fare on this guide should replace a dated quote.
