Taking pets on ferries from Great Britain

Arrange the animal’s travel documents and the carrier’s limited pet accommodation before booking.

Check the destination and residence rules

Government entry rules and ferry accommodation rules are separate. For travel from Great Britain to the EU, check the current rules for microchipping, rabies vaccination, health certification and entry points. A pet needs its own compliant arrangements even when the owner can travel under a simpler document regime.

Animal health certificates and EU pet passports

Under the current GOV.UK guidance, a person resident in England, Scotland or Wales cannot use an EU pet passport to take their pet into the EU, even if that passport was issued in an EU country. Check the requirement for an animal health certificate with an official veterinarian. Northern Ireland residents have different arrangements. Do not rely on a previous trip’s paperwork without checking the current rules.

Book the pet space with the crossing

A pet-friendly cabin, kennel, lounge place or permission for the pet to remain in a vehicle can be capacity-limited and route-specific. Reserve the required option with the ferry rather than adding the animal to a passenger count. Ask whether the ship allows visits during the sailing and where exercise areas are located.

Dogs, cats, ferrets and assistance animals

Requirements depend on the species, destination and circumstances. Assistance animals can have distinct carrier procedures but still need compliant travel documentation. Tell the operator about the animal before departure and discuss any boarding support. The rules for commercial movement or travelling with more animals can differ from a normal holiday trip.

The return to Great Britain

Check the UK return rules before leaving, including approved routes, valid documentation and any required dog tapeworm treatment with its timing and veterinary record. Arrange the overseas veterinary appointment early enough to fit the return ferry. A change to the sailing date may mean the treatment window must be recalculated.

Northern Ireland and island journeys

Great Britain–Northern Ireland pet travel has its own scheme and conditions; do not use a general EU checklist as a substitute. The Republic of Ireland and the Channel Islands also require route-specific checks. On domestic island services, check whether animals are accepted, require a ticket and may enter passenger spaces.
