Plan the route that fits your journey

Ireland’s ferry network is easiest to understand as three kinds of journey: Irish Sea crossings from Great Britain, longer direct sailings to France or Spain, and local ferries around the island’s coast. Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have different entry contexts, so check the actual destination and your own documents.

For Dublin and the east, compare Holyhead. Rosslare offers Welsh links and continental services; Cork adds direct routes to France. Belfast and Larne suit Northern Ireland and journeys continuing through the north. A longer sea crossing can be useful when it avoids driving through Britain or reduces the mileage after arrival.

Local island names need care. The Aran Islands in Galway Bay are not Arranmore in Donegal, and neither is Scotland’s Isle of Arran. Galway city products may include a road transfer to Rossaveel, while Doolin services leave from County Clare. Read the boarding point, island and return arrangement on the ticket.

Practical planning

Across the Irish Sea

British and Irish citizens benefit from the Common Travel Area, but ferry companies set their own check-in identification requirements. Bring the documents required by the booked operator rather than relying on a general statement that a passport is unnecessary.

Driving around the coast

The Shannon, Passage East, Carlingford and Lough Foyle crossings can fit a coastal road trip. Some are seasonal; check the last sailing and the road alternative before relying on them.

Offshore island visits

Small passenger boats do not offer the same vehicle, pet or accessibility arrangements as large Irish Sea ferries. Reserve both directions where needed and leave flexibility for Atlantic weather.
