The largest of the Isles of Scilly and the principal sea-arrival point for passengers from Penzance. St Mary’s combines the archipelago’s main services with coastal paths, coves and historic sites.
Arrival is at Hugh Town, from where much of the settlement is walkable. Local transport and inter-island boats connect with beaches and the other inhabited islands.
For ferry planning, start with the sailing rather than the sightseeing itinerary. Check the exact port, boarding time and passenger or vehicle conditions, then work backwards to decide where to stay and how much transfer time is needed. Sea conditions can affect the mainland service. Keep onward island transfers flexible until the arrival time is clear.
Plan your onward journey from the landing point at St Mary’s. If someone is collecting you, agree the pier and allow time to disembark; book any onward transport before relying on a tight connection.
Local passenger boats connect St Mary’s with the other inhabited Isles of Scilly and run excursions through the archipelago.
Published boating plans depend on weather and tides. The landing place may change, particularly around Tresco and St Martin’s, so use the departure-day information.
These local tickets are separate from the Scillonian crossing from Penzance. An island transfer should leave a generous margin before the mainland ferry’s check-in.
Domestic travel still has operator rules: names, any required identification, vehicle size and assistance arrangements must match the booking. If this sailing connects with a second ferry, check whether the tickets protect the connection. Allow a margin before an infrequent island bus or the last return boat.
