CalMac has confirmed that Ardrossan–Campbeltown will not operate in 2026 or 2027. Compare road travel through Kintyre and other current CalMac crossings.

The crossing at a glance

The former summer Clyde crossing is not a bookable shortcut for 2026 or 2027. CalMac confirmed on 6 October 2026 that the service will also not operate in 2027. Use the A83 road route to Kintyre or plan a separate multi-stage island journey.

This journey starts at Ardrossan (Scotland, United Kingdom) and finishes at Campbeltown (South Kintyre). Use the route in this direction when checking departure times; the return guide has the opposite boarding point.

Ardrossan

Ayrshire ferry port on Scotland’s Firth of Clyde and a mainland gateway for Arran. The town combines a working harbour, marina and west-coast views across the Clyde toward Arran.

Ardrossan is connected by road and rail with the wider Glasgow and Ayrshire area. Allow extra time to reach the correct harbour entrance and check the terminal shown on the booking confirmation.

For ferry planning, start with the sailing rather than the sightseeing itinerary. Check the exact port, boarding time and passenger or vehicle conditions, then work backwards to decide where to stay and how much transfer time is needed. Weather and operational changes can affect island services, so reconfirm the sailing before setting out.

Ardrossan has no ferry sailings from 7 September to 8 October 2026 inclusive while harbour works take place. Arran services use Troon during this period. Check CalMac’s service status and your confirmed mainland port before travelling.

Before setting off for Ardrossan, check the operator’s departure pier and the day’s service notice. Leave enough time to reach the boarding area with your luggage or vehicle.

Campbeltown

Campbeltown is reached by road along the Kintyre peninsula when the former seasonal Clyde ferry is unavailable. The town is not served by an active Ardrossan ferry in 2026 or 2027.

Plan your onward journey from the landing point at Campbeltown. If someone is collecting you, agree the pier and allow time to disembark; book any onward transport before relying on a tight connection.

CalMac Ferries

Caledonian MacBrayne — almost universally known as CalMac — is not a single long-distance ferry route but a dense network of mainland-to-island and island-to-island services. The operator describes itself as the largest ferry company in the United Kingdom, with 35 vessels serving more than 50 destinations across around 200 miles of Scotland’s west coast. For visitors, that means routes to famous islands such as Arran, Mull, Islay, Skye, Harris, Lewis, Barra and the Uists. For island communities, the same ferries carry commuters, schoolchildren, freight, food, tradespeople, medical travellers and the everyday traffic that keeps remote communities connected.

Planning travel with CalMac Ferries

The network is best understood by region. The Firth of Clyde includes Arran, Bute, Cumbrae, Cowal and Kintyre. The Southern Hebrides add Islay, Gigha and Colonsay. Oban is the key hub for much of the Inner Hebrides, including Mull, Coll, Tiree, Lismore and Colonsay, while Mallaig links the mainland with Skye, South Uist and the Small Isles. Farther north and west, Ullapool and Uig provide major gateways into the Outer Hebrides.

Planning note: timetable patterns, vessel assignment and disruption can change. The sailing shown on your booking and CalMac’s live service-status information should always be treated as the final authority.

Planning a domestic ferry journey

Domestic travel still has operator rules: names, any required identification, vehicle size and assistance arrangements must match the booking. If this sailing connects with a second ferry, check whether the tickets protect the connection. Allow a margin before an infrequent island bus or the last return boat.
