Shetland’s local ferry network links the inhabited islands with Mainland and with one another. These sailings are separate from NorthLink’s overnight Aberdeen and Kirkwall connections.
For Yell, Unst and Fetlar, plan the full chain of sea crossings and the drive across Yell. A booking on one sound does not reserve the next ferry. Remote island services have much more limited operating days than the busiest northern crossings.
The council publishes separate timetable groups for Yell, Unst and Fetlar and for Bressay, Whalsay, Out Skerries, Papa Stour, Fair Isle and Foula. Check service status as well as the timetable, especially when weather changes the departure pier.
Vehicle reservations, standby queues and passenger requirements differ by service. Remote-island boats should not be assumed to carry a visitor’s car; arrange freight, bicycles and any assistance with the ferries office.
Using this local ferry network
Begin with the named departure and arrival piers. Shetland Islands Council Ferries services may use different ticket arrangements from the large international ferries shown elsewhere on FerryEU. Use the official timetable for the sailing date and check whether a reservation is needed.
Do not assume that every connection runs daily or that an island boat carries cars. A circuit calling at several islands can take different times in each direction. Check intermediate stops, last return sailings and any requirement to request a call or book in advance.
Where a crossing is part of a longer trip, plan a road alternative or a flexible overnight stop. Weather and vessel maintenance can affect smaller networks, and a separate train, hotel or ferry booking may not be protected if a sailing is cancelled.
Before you pay for a Shetland Islands Council Ferries ticket
Check the full journey on the quote: departure and arrival ports, dates, local times, passenger names and the category of every vehicle or bicycle. A route listed on an operator’s network map may have restricted sailing days or a different passenger product from its other services.
Review the included accommodation, luggage arrangements and whether meals or reserved seats cost extra. Ask about boarding assistance and pet capacity before payment. For local ferries, find out whether an online ticket reserves space or is simply valid for the operating period.
Save the carrier’s check-in instructions and recheck service updates before setting off. If a sailing changes, contact the company shown on the confirmation or the booking provider that sold the ticket. FerryEU cannot access or amend a reservation made with another service.
