How to compare ferry tickets and booking conditions

Build a like-for-like quote and understand who handles the reservation after payment.

Compare a complete itinerary

Search the outward and return dates with every passenger and the correct vehicle category. Add mandatory accommodation and any extras you need, such as pet space or a reserved seat. Compare the final total and currency shown by the booking provider. A low headline vehicle fare can exclude part of the journey you actually intend to buy.

Understand flexibility

Read amendment fees, cancellation conditions and any fare difference payable if a date changes. A flexible ticket may still have restrictions. Check whether a missed check-in is treated differently from an advance amendment and whether a return has to be used in a particular order.

Confirm the seller and operator

FerryEU provides guides and comparison links. The confirmation identifies the booking provider and the carrier operating the ferry. Keep both names and the booking reference. If you need to amend a booking made through an intermediary, its servicing process may differ from one bought directly from the ferry company.

Availability is specific to the sailing

A route guide does not guarantee space. Vehicle decks, foot-passenger capacity, cabins and pet accommodation can sell out independently. Try nearby dates or an alternative port, but recalculate the onward journey and any extra accommodation cost before deciding that a different sailing is better value.

Keep the confirmation

Save the confirmation offline and check the ports, dates, local times, passenger details, vehicle measurements and check-in deadlines immediately. Contact the seller promptly if anything is wrong. Recheck the carrier’s service updates before leaving for the terminal, especially for weather-sensitive island routes.

If a sailing changes

Use the carrier’s notice and the booking provider’s instructions for rebooking or refunds. Rights depend on the journey and circumstances; do not assume every disruption produces the same remedy. Keep evidence of the booking and communications, and use the official passenger-rights information for the relevant route.
