Plan the route that fits your journey

Northern Ireland’s main sea gateways are Belfast and Larne. Cairnryan provides the short Scottish approach, while the Liverpool–Belfast crossing suits an overnight journey from England. The choice depends on your starting point and whether you prefer more time driving or more time aboard.

Belfast’s passenger terminals are in the port area rather than at an arbitrary city-centre waterfront point. Larne is a separate port north of Belfast. Match your taxi, coach or car navigation to the carrier’s terminal instructions, especially for an early departure or a late arrival.

The local ferry network adds practical and scenic journeys: Ballycastle for Rathlin, Strangford–Portaferry across the lough mouth, and coastal links across Carlingford Lough and Lough Foyle. The last two connect with the Republic of Ireland, so they should be planned as cross-border trips even though the boat journey is short.

Practical planning

Travelling from Great Britain

Domestic journeys to Northern Ireland differ from entering the Republic of Ireland. Check the carrier’s ID policy, and use current government rules for pets, goods and any onward border crossing.

Choosing Belfast or Larne

Compare the port approach as well as the crossing. Scotland’s Cairnryan terminals are operator-specific, and a departure for Belfast is different from one for Larne.

An island or lough day trip

Book the correct Rathlin vessel and return sailing. For local vehicle ferries, read the operating-season and service notices before relying on the crossing for a fixed appointment.
