Compare Portsmouth and Plymouth departures for a Spanish road trip with your own car, motorhome or motorcycle.
Northern Spain provides a direct sea approach that avoids driving the length of France. Santander and Bilbao are different arrival points with different road journeys afterwards. Match the terminal and arrival time with the region you intend to visit, rather than choosing only by the shortest sea passage.
The drive to the British port can change the choice. Plymouth can suit the south-west, while Portsmouth gives a different approach from London, the Midlands and the south. Check the sailing days in both directions before fixing holiday dates. A return from a different Spanish port can be useful for touring but must be priced as a complete itinerary.
Compare the cabin type, occupancy and any mandatory accommodation requirement. Pet cabins and kennels can sell out before vehicle space. Include meals and the onboard spending you expect when comparing the ferry with a Channel crossing plus fuel, tolls and hotels.
Check the carrier’s exact terminal directions and the onward Spanish route. Include a rest stop after disembarkation and verify current driving, vehicle and travel-document requirements through official sources. If continuing by public transport, arrange the port-to-station connection before reserving a train.
A trip to the Balearic or Canary Islands adds another ferry stage and sometimes a substantial drive to the departure port. These sailings have their own vehicle and ticket conditions. Leave a generous margin between separate bookings and check the final return to Britain before paying for the full touring plan.
