Scottish island hopping by ferry

Plan the Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland with separate networks, realistic connections and the right vehicle reservations.

Choose a network before an itinerary

CalMac serves the Clyde and Hebrides. NorthLink connects Aberdeen and Scrabster with Orkney and Shetland; Pentland Ferries provides another mainland–Orkney crossing. Orkney Ferries and Shetland Islands Council operate separate inter-island networks. Tickets are not automatically interchangeable or through-booked between those companies.

Use precise piers

On Mull, Craignure, Fishnish and Tobermory lead to different mainland connections. On Hoy, Moaness and Lyness suit different journeys and travel modes. Kirkwall, Stromness, Houton and Tingwall serve different Orkney islands. In Shetland, a journey to Unst can involve Toft–Ulsta, a drive across Yell and then Gutcher–Belmont. Each leg needs its own timetable check.

Bookable and turn-up-and-go routes

CalMac distinguishes sailings on which a reservation secures space from turn-up-and-go routes where an advance ticket does not reserve a particular departure. Check the route’s current classification. Vehicle capacity is limited, and a bicycle should be declared even when carried without a separate fare. Small Isles vehicle travel can require island permission, making foot travel the normal visitor choice.

Build a workable island circuit

Secure the scarce vehicle sailings before fixing non-refundable accommodation. Read the direction and sequence of calls on multi-island workings; a service that appears in a route selector may not run directly every day. Allow a generous connection margin between separate boats, and include the road time across an island between its piers.

Current CalMac changes

Ardrossan has a published closure from 7 September to 8 October 2026 inclusive, with Arran sailings using Troon during the works. Check the current service status before travelling, including after the stated closure window. CalMac has also confirmed that Ardrossan–Campbeltown will not operate in 2026 or 2027. Do not base a Kintyre itinerary on an old seasonal timetable.

Weather, buses and the final mainland connection

A service can change because of weather, tides, vessel deployment or maintenance. Check alerts before leaving accommodation for a remote pier. Island buses may run only on certain days or connect with selected sailings; a ferry arrival does not guarantee an onward bus. Leave a flexible overnight margin before a flight or an important mainland appointment.
