Salerno sits at the eastern end of the Amalfi Coast, combining a handsome seafront, an atmospheric medieval centre and unusually useful sea connections for both long-distance and coastal travel.
The Lungomare Trieste is Salerno’s social spine, running beside the Gulf of Salerno with palms, cafés and views towards the mountains that frame the coast.
Behind the waterfront, the historic centre climbs through narrow streets around the Cathedral of San Matteo, Via dei Mercanti and small piazzas that are especially pleasant in the evening.
The Minerva Garden recalls Salerno’s medieval medical tradition, while Arechi Castle stands high above the city with broad views over the gulf and the coast towards Amalfi.
Salerno is also one of the most practical bases for exploring the Amalfi Coast without a car. Travelmar passenger ferries run from the tourist pier near the railway station to Amalfi, Positano, Vietri sul Mare, Cetara, Maiori, Minori and other seasonal stops.
Longer-distance Grimaldi Lines ferries use the commercial port at Via Ligea, with current 2026 passenger and vehicle services linking Salerno with Palermo and Tunis. These board in a different part of the harbour from the coastal fast ferries.
Rail and motorway links make Salerno useful in a wider southern Italy itinerary too. Naples, Pompeii and Paestum can all be combined with a stay, while the city itself is compact enough to explore largely on foot.
Salerno offers enough history and atmosphere for a city stay while also being one of the easiest maritime gateways to the Amalfi Coast.

Because Salerno has more than one passenger boarding area, always check the operator and pier shown on your ticket. The commercial ferry terminal and the central tourist-ferry pier are not interchangeable.
Travelmar coastal passenger ferries use the tourist port at Piazza della Concordia, close to Salerno railway station, for Amalfi Coast services including Amalfi, Positano, Vietri sul Mare, Cetara, Maiori and Minori.
Long-distance Grimaldi Lines ferries use Salerno’s commercial port on Via Ligea, West Side Commercial Port. Current services include passenger and vehicle sailings to Palermo and Tunis.
Salerno is compact and well connected by rail, bus and passenger ferry, making it an excellent car-free base for Campania.
The railway station, waterfront, historic centre and central tourist-ferry pier are all within a practical walking area.

Passenger ferries are often the most pleasant way to reach Amalfi Coast towns during the busy season, avoiding slow coastal-road traffic.
The central waterfront gives easy access to restaurants, rail and coastal ferries; the historic centre is best for atmosphere, while drivers using Grimaldi should allow extra time to reach Via Ligea.
Salerno has multiple passenger boarding areas. Grimaldi uses the commercial port at Via Ligea, while Travelmar’s Amalfi Coast ferries use the tourist pier at Piazza della Concordia.
Current services include Grimaldi ferries to Palermo and Tunis plus Travelmar passenger ferries to Amalfi, Positano and other Amalfi Coast ports.

Definitely. Long-distance and coastal services use different parts of the harbour, so use the exact operator and boarding point printed on your ticket.
Pin the precise ferry terminal before travelling to Salerno. Some towns have separate passenger quays, vehicle terminals and excursion-boat landings. The operator’s address on your confirmation is more useful than a town-centre map pin.
For a car journey, leave a margin for the final approach, queueing and check-in. Without a car, confirm the last part of the journey from the railway station or bus stop. A short map distance may involve port roads or areas closed to pedestrians; use a confirmed transfer or walking route.
Keep your booking reference and required documents accessible. If you need step-free boarding, help with luggage or space for a bicycle, arrange it before the day of travel. Small piers and large vehicle terminals can offer very different facilities.
Plan each sea leg as a separate part of the trip. Check the arrival port, transfer distance, vehicle restrictions and the time before the next sailing. A ticket sold by one company or booking provider does not automatically create a protected connection with another.
Check your arrival time against accommodation check-in and the next transport service. If this is an island stay, organise the return ferry before fixing a mainland flight or a long-distance train. The outward and return ports do not have to be the same, but separate tickets can have different conditions.
