Discover Rotterdam

Rotterdam is the Netherlands’ most architecturally adventurous major city, shaped by the Nieuwe Maas, an immense working port and a skyline that feels very different from the country’s older canal cities.

The city centre rewards walking with striking contrasts: the yellow Cube Houses sit close to the old harbour, the Markthal combines food stalls with dramatic contemporary design, and the Erasmus Bridge forms one of Rotterdam’s defining river views.

Museumpark and the surrounding cultural quarter add galleries, design and the mirrored Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, while nearby Witte de Withstraat is a lively choice for cafés, restaurants and evening stops.

Delfshaven offers a more historic side of Rotterdam, with canals, old warehouses and waterside terraces that survived much of the wartime destruction that reshaped the modern centre.

For wider sightseeing, water taxis and harbour cruises make the river part of the experience, and Kinderdijk’s windmills are an easy excursion for travellers who want a classic Dutch landscape alongside the modern city.

The passenger ferry terminal is not in the city centre: P&O Ferries uses Europoort, roughly 38 km west of central Rotterdam. Build transfer time into your plans, especially if travelling without a car, because the terminal is deep within the port area.

Rotterdam works particularly well as the start or finish of a driving holiday. Motorway access from Europoort is straightforward, while the central city has excellent rail connections for onward travel across the Netherlands and into Belgium, France and Germany.

Rotterdam Ferry Terminal

If travelling without a vehicle, plan the terminal transfer in advance. P&O states that there is no normal public transport directly to or from Europoort, although bookable coach transfers are offered on selected arrangements between the port and Rotterdam or Amsterdam.

The route is an overnight North Sea crossing and carries cars, motorcycles, campervans, caravans, bicycles and foot passengers according to the booked fare and sailing conditions.

P&O Ferries operates the passenger and vehicle ferry between Rotterdam Europoort and Hull. The Europoort terminal is in the western port zone, around 38 km from Rotterdam city centre rather than beside the central railway station.

Getting around Rotterdam

Central Rotterdam has excellent public transport, but Europoort is remote from the city centre and needs separate transfer planning.

Use Rotterdam public transport

Metro, tram and bus services cover the centre, neighbourhoods and major visitor areas efficiently.

Plan the Europoort transfer

Allow generous time for the journey between the city and ferry terminal; drivers use the A15 while foot passengers should arrange the operator transfer or another confirmed option in advance.

Stay in Rotterdam

Stay in central Rotterdam or near your onward route

Central Rotterdam is best for sightseeing and rail connections; travellers with an early port arrival may prefer accommodation positioned for the A15 and Europoort.

Common planning questions

Rotterdam ferry & destination FAQs

Where is Rotterdam Ferry Terminal?

P&O Ferries uses Europoort Ferry Terminal on Luxemburgweg, around 38 km west of central Rotterdam.

Where can I sail from Rotterdam in 2026?

The regular passenger ferry route from Rotterdam Europoort is the P&O Ferries overnight crossing to Hull.

Can I take a car on the Rotterdam to Hull ferry?

Yes. The route carries cars and other road vehicles as well as foot passengers, subject to the fare and booking conditions.

Is Rotterdam Ferry Terminal in the city centre?

No. Europoort is in the western port area, so you should allow substantial transfer time from central Rotterdam.

Is there public transport to Europoort Ferry Terminal?

P&O advises that normal public transport does not run directly to the terminal. Bookable coach transfers may be available, so check your sailing arrangements in advance.

What are the best things to do in Rotterdam?

Popular choices include Erasmus Bridge, Markthal, the Cube Houses, Museumpark, Delfshaven and a harbour cruise.

Is Rotterdam easy to explore without a car?

Yes. The city centre has strong tram, metro, bus and rail connections; the main exception is the remote ferry terminal.

Should I book the Rotterdam–Hull ferry in advance?

Yes, especially if travelling with a vehicle, cabin or during busy holiday periods, because overnight sailings have finite vehicle and accommodation capacity.

Where can you travel from Rotterdam?

The route catalogue includes departures towards Hull. Each direction has its own guide so that you can check the correct starting pier and arrival arrangements. A listed connection may be seasonal, a multi-stop itinerary or a former service; read its service status before making plans.

Ferries arriving in Rotterdam

Reaching the harbour and checking in

The P&O terminal is at Europoort, west of central Rotterdam. It is a major industrial-port area rather than a city-centre terminal, with direct road access to the A15 for Rotterdam, Amsterdam and the wider Netherlands.

Pin the precise ferry terminal before travelling to Rotterdam. Some towns have separate passenger quays, vehicle terminals and excursion-boat landings. The operator’s address on your confirmation is more useful than a town-centre map pin.

For a car journey, leave a margin for the final approach, queueing and check-in. Without a car, confirm the last part of the journey from the railway station or bus stop. A short map distance may involve port roads or areas closed to pedestrians; use a confirmed transfer or walking route.

Keep your booking reference and required documents accessible. If you need step-free boarding, help with luggage or space for a bicycle, arrange it before the day of travel. Small piers and large vehicle terminals can offer very different facilities.

Building Rotterdam into a wider journey

Plan each sea leg as a separate part of the trip. Check the arrival port, transfer distance, vehicle restrictions and the time before the next sailing. A ticket sold by one company or booking provider does not automatically create a protected connection with another.

Check your arrival time against accommodation check-in and the next transport service. If this is an island stay, organise the return ferry before fixing a mainland flight or a long-distance train. The outward and return ports do not have to be the same, but separate tickets can have different conditions.
