Brittany Ferries: October 2026 service changes

Brittany Ferries confirmed on 30 September 2026 that Portsmouth–Le Havre had closed early following a technical problem with Commodore Clipper. It also announced an earlier October closure of the direct Poole–Cherbourg service. Barfleur is due to begin Rosslare–Cherbourg sailings on 12 October 2026. Affected customers should contact Brittany Ferries about alternative travel or refunds.

Discover Poole

Poole sits on one of Europe’s largest natural harbours, with a lively quay, historic old town and quick access to Brownsea Island, Sandbanks and the Purbeck coast.

Poole Quay is the natural starting point, lined with boats, pubs and restaurants beside the old town. Harbour cruises and boats to Brownsea Island leave from this waterfront area.

To the east, Sandbanks is known for its beaches and harbour views, while the chain ferry gives road access toward Studland and the Isle of Purbeck.

Brittany Ferries announced on 30 September 2026 that direct Poole–Cherbourg sailings would end earlier than planned in October. Barfleur is due to start Rosslare–Cherbourg sailings on 12 October 2026. Confirm the final operating dates directly with the operator; do not assume this direct route is available for later travel. Poole’s Channel Islands services are separate; check their dated timetables.

The ferry terminal is in Hamworthy on the western side of the harbour. Allow time for local road traffic, especially in summer when the Sandbanks and coastal routes are busy.

The harbour setting gives Poole a strong outdoor character, with sailing, paddleboarding, coastal walks and wildlife trips all readily available. Brownsea Island in particular offers woodland, shoreline scenery and one of southern England’s best-known red-squirrel habitats.

Poole also sits beside Bournemouth and within easy reach of the Jurassic Coast, Corfe Castle and Swanage. Travellers arriving with a car can therefore use the ferry terminal as the start of a varied Dorset and south-coast itinerary.

Ferries arriving in Poole

Reaching the harbour and checking in

Poole ferry port lies close to the town and is reached from the A31, A35 and A350 routes. The terminal supports vehicle and foot passengers, with a shuttle bus used for pedestrian boarding.

Pin the precise ferry terminal before travelling to Poole. Some towns have separate passenger quays, vehicle terminals and excursion-boat landings. The operator’s address on your confirmation is more useful than a town-centre map pin.

For a car journey, leave a margin for the final approach, queueing and check-in. Without a car, confirm the last part of the journey from the railway station or bus stop. A short map distance may involve port roads or areas closed to pedestrians; use a confirmed transfer or walking route.

Keep your booking reference and required documents accessible. If you need step-free boarding, help with luggage or space for a bicycle, arrange it before the day of travel. Small piers and large vehicle terminals can offer very different facilities.

Building Poole into a wider journey

For a trip from northern or central England, an overnight sailing can replace a long drive south and an extra hotel stop. For Brittany, Normandy or northern Spain, arriving farther west may save substantial mileage after disembarkation. Compare the complete outward and return itinerary, including cabins, road tolls, fuel and port transfers.

Check your arrival time against accommodation check-in and the next transport service. If this is an island stay, organise the return ferry before fixing a mainland flight or a long-distance train. The outward and return ports do not have to be the same, but separate tickets can have different conditions.
