A vibrant southern Italian city with major ferry links across the Bay of Naples and wider Mediterranean
Naples is one of Europe’s most energetic port cities, layered with Greek and Roman history, Baroque churches, dense neighbourhoods and a food culture that has travelled around the world.
The historic centre is a maze of narrow streets, churches and workshops, with Spaccanapoli cutting across the old urban fabric. Archaeological collections in the National Museum provide essential context for nearby Pompeii and Herculaneum.
The waterfront opens toward Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples, with ferries constantly moving between the city and Capri, Ischia, Procida and the Sorrento coast.
Naples is also a major long-distance ferry port. Grimaldi Lines publishes a 2026 Naples–Palermo timetable, while other operators connect the city with Sardinia and additional southern Italian destinations.
The city’s transport network makes it possible to combine a ferry journey with Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast, Caserta or onward rail travel through Italy.
Naples deserves more than a transit stop: even one full day can combine the historic centre, outstanding food, archaeological treasures and waterfront views.

Both main ferry areas are close to central Naples. Metro, buses, taxis and walking connections link the port with Napoli Centrale and the historic centre, although travellers with luggage should allow extra time for the exact pier.
Grimaldi Lines publishes regular 2026 Naples–Palermo sailings, including overnight departures. Other operators provide links to Sardinia and destinations around the Bay of Naples, so the correct terminal depends on the booked route and vessel type.
Naples uses several passenger-ferry areas. Molo Beverello handles many fast passenger services to nearby islands, while larger vehicle ferries commonly use Calata Porta di Massa within the main port.
Naples has metro, suburban rail, buses and national rail links, while many central sights and ferry areas are within a compact core.
Spaccanapoli, major churches, markets and many food stops are best explored on foot.

Yes. Grimaldi Lines publishes regular 2026 Naples–Palermo sailings.
Yes on the larger vehicle ferries, but many hydrofoils and fast island services are passenger-only.
It depends on operator and vessel; always use the pier shown on the ticket rather than assuming all ferries leave from one terminal.
The historic centre, archaeological museum, seafront, pizza culture and trips to Pompeii or the bay islands are major highlights.
The port is a short metro, taxi or bus journey from Napoli Centrale; some central ferry areas are also walkable from downtown.
Yes for long-distance sailings, vehicles and summer island travel, when demand can be high.

Naples has several ferry terminals around the central port. Check the Grimaldi confirmation carefully because different operators and destinations use different areas.
Pin the precise ferry terminal before travelling to Naples. Some towns have separate passenger quays, vehicle terminals and excursion-boat landings. The operator’s address on your confirmation is more useful than a town-centre map pin.
For a car journey, leave a margin for the final approach, queueing and check-in. Without a car, confirm the last part of the journey from the railway station or bus stop. A short map distance may involve port roads or areas closed to pedestrians; use a confirmed transfer or walking route.
Keep your booking reference and required documents accessible. If you need step-free boarding, help with luggage or space for a bicycle, arrange it before the day of travel. Small piers and large vehicle terminals can offer very different facilities.
Plan each sea leg as a separate part of the trip. Check the arrival port, transfer distance, vehicle restrictions and the time before the next sailing. A ticket sold by one company or booking provider does not automatically create a protected connection with another.
Check your arrival time against accommodation check-in and the next transport service. If this is an island stay, organise the return ferry before fixing a mainland flight or a long-distance train. The outward and return ports do not have to be the same, but separate tickets can have different conditions.
