Discover Le Havre

Brittany Ferries confirmed on 30 September 2026 that its Portsmouth–Le Havre service had ended early after a technical problem with Commodore Clipper. Do not plan around the former timetable. Compare Portsmouth–Caen or Portsmouth–Cherbourg and check availability for your dates.

Le Havre is one of Normandy’s most distinctive cities. Rebuilt after the Second World War under architect Auguste Perret, its central district is recognised by UNESCO for the exceptional coherence of its modern concrete architecture.

Saint-Joseph Church is the defining landmark, with a slender lantern tower visible across the city and coloured glass transforming the interior light. Nearby streets show how Perret’s planning created broad avenues and carefully proportioned urban spaces.

The MuMa André Malraux museum sits close to the sea and holds an important collection associated with Impressionism and the artists inspired by the changing light around the Seine estuary.

Le Havre also has a long beach, marina, waterfront promenades and the Hanging Gardens in a former hilltop fort. Honfleur and Étretat make excellent nearby excursions if you have a car or time for a regional tour.

Ferries arriving in Le Havre

Reaching the harbour and checking in

Pin the precise ferry terminal before travelling to Le Havre. Some towns have separate passenger quays, vehicle terminals and excursion-boat landings. The operator’s address on your confirmation is more useful than a town-centre map pin.

For a car journey, leave a margin for the final approach, queueing and check-in. Without a car, confirm the last part of the journey from the railway station or bus stop. A short map distance may involve port roads or areas closed to pedestrians; use a confirmed transfer or walking route.

Keep your booking reference and required documents accessible. If you need step-free boarding, help with luggage or space for a bicycle, arrange it before the day of travel. Small piers and large vehicle terminals can offer very different facilities.

Building Le Havre into a wider journey

Plan each sea leg as a separate part of the trip. Check the arrival port, transfer distance, vehicle restrictions and the time before the next sailing. A ticket sold by one company or booking provider does not automatically create a protected connection with another.

Check your arrival time against accommodation check-in and the next transport service. If this is an island stay, organise the return ferry before fixing a mainland flight or a long-distance train. The outward and return ports do not have to be the same, but separate tickets can have different conditions.
