Discover Dubrovnik

A walled Adriatic city of limestone streets, island views and one of Croatia’s most recognisable historic skylines

Dubrovnik’s Old Town is one of the Mediterranean’s most distinctive historic centres. Enclosed by massive stone walls and facing the Adriatic, it combines monumental architecture with narrow lanes, small squares and views towards nearby islands.

Walking the city walls is the classic first experience. The elevated circuit reveals rooftops, forts and sea views, while the Stradun below provides the main pedestrian axis through the old city.

The cable car to Mount Srđ adds a different perspective, especially around late afternoon. From the summit, the old walls, Lokrum and the wider Dalmatian coastline are spread out below.

Dubrovnik also works as a base for island and coastal excursions. Lokrum is close enough for a short boat trip, while the Elafiti Islands and nearby parts of southern Dalmatia reward longer exploration.

International ferry travellers use Gruž harbour rather than the Old Port beside the city walls. Jadrolinija operates the seasonal Dubrovnik–Bari route in 2026, alongside domestic passenger services along the Croatian coast.

Gruž passenger ferry harbour in Dubrovnik, Croatia
Arriving or departing by ferry

Dubrovnik Gruž Ferry Terminal

The Bari service carries passengers and vehicles on scheduled seasonal sailings. Domestic coastal services vary by operator, vessel type and season, so confirm vehicle acceptance separately for each journey.

Do not confuse Gruž with the small Old Port beside the historic walls. Check the exact berth and operator shown on your ticket, particularly when combining ferries, catamarans and local boat trips.

International and most domestic passenger ferries use Gruž harbour, several kilometres from Dubrovnik’s Old Town. Jadrolinija’s 2026 programme includes seasonal Dubrovnik–Bari sailings between Croatia and Italy.

Ferries arriving in Dubrovnik

Reaching the harbour and checking in

Dubrovnik’s international ferry facilities are in the Gruž harbour area, with city buses and roads leading to the historic centre.

Pin the precise ferry terminal before travelling to Dubrovnik. Some towns have separate passenger quays, vehicle terminals and excursion-boat landings. The operator’s address on your confirmation is more useful than a town-centre map pin.

For a car journey, leave a margin for the final approach, queueing and check-in. Without a car, confirm the last part of the journey from the railway station or bus stop. A short map distance may involve port roads or areas closed to pedestrians; use a confirmed transfer or walking route.

Keep your booking reference and required documents accessible. If you need step-free boarding, help with luggage or space for a bicycle, arrange it before the day of travel. Small piers and large vehicle terminals can offer very different facilities.

Building Dubrovnik into a wider journey

Plan each sea leg as a separate part of the trip. Check the arrival port, transfer distance, vehicle restrictions and the time before the next sailing. A ticket sold by one company or booking provider does not automatically create a protected connection with another.

Check your arrival time against accommodation check-in and the next transport service. If this is an island stay, organise the return ferry before fixing a mainland flight or a long-distance train. The outward and return ports do not have to be the same, but separate tickets can have different conditions.
